VOLUNTEER ROLE DESCRIPTON
| POSITION | 'Vet Run' Driver |
| SUPERVISION | The volunteer vet run driver will work closely with our adoptions counselors under the direction of the Adoptions and Animal Care Manager. |
| TASK | To transport selected animals (usually cats and dogs) between the shelter and our local veterinarian clinics using our SPCA van. |
| QUALIFICATIONS | Must be at least 25 years old with a clear driving record; good communication skills and some computer data entry and recording an asset; sensitivity and familiarity with handling animals a must. |
| SCREENING | All volunteers must complete the appropriate SPCA orientation, screening and training procedures, including at least two personal references and a police clearance check. |
| HOURS OF WORK | Vet runs occur twice daily Monday thru Friday from approximately 8:30 am to 10:00 am and 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. |
| EVALUATION | An evaluation interview will take place after six months of service and thereafter on an annual basis. |
VOLUNTEER 'VET RUN' DRIVER
GENERAL DUTIES
- Morning vet run begins at about 8:30 am at the SPCA shelter. Afternoon run begins at about 3:00 pm. Either run should take no more than two hours from pick-up to drop-off.
- At the beginning of each shift, circle-check the SPCA vehicle ensuring that all lights and signals etc are in proper operation and that there is no apparent damage to the exterior.
- Check that the fire extinguisher and road safety pack are present and in good order.
- Check the horn and all fluid levels including gas, oil, windshield washer etc. and check that the fire extinguisher is properly located in the van and in good working order.
- Obtain cell phone from volunteer coordinator for use in emergency.
- Check all transporting cages for cleanliness and proper closing and restraining clasps.
- Check with appropriated SPCA reception staff as to which animals are to be transported and note proper destinations.
- Double check all labels and cages to ensure correct animal is transported and delivered to the appropriate clinic.
- Pick up selected animals at the vet clinic and return to SPCA shelter, again checking all labels and cages.
- At the completion of both shifts, park vehicle in SPCA lot, return the key to the volunteer office and advise staff whether any service (gas etc.) is needed for the van.
