VOLUNTEER ROLE DESCRIPTON
| POSITION | Light Maintenance Assistant |
| SUPERVISION | The Light Maintenance Assistant will also work closely with staff from all other shelter departments, depending on the work being done, under the general direction of the Manager of Adoptions and Animal Care |
| TASK | The Light Maintenance Assistant will complete a variety of tasks, according to their ability and expertise, including; painting, cleaning, basic electrical (changing light fixtures etc.), basic plumbing (clearing drains etc.), some light grounds keeping and a variety of basic repairs, in keeping with the tenants of the Health and Safety Act. |
| QUALIFICATIONS | Some experience in janitorial or general building and grounds maintenance and repair is preferred but not essential. This position may require bending and lifting. Appropriate training will be provided, including WHMIS. |
| SCREENING | All volunteers must complete the appropriate SPCA orientation, screening and training procedures, including at least two personal references and a police criminal clearance check. |
| HOURS OF WORK | Specific hours may vary. The SPCA shelter operates on a seven day a week basis, including the possibility of early evening and weekend activities. It would be preferred that the light maintenance assistant be available for shifts of 4 to 8 hours. |
| EVALUATION | Regular and consistent evaluation is the keystone of effective program evaluation. Informal evaluation occurs on an ongoing basis at the SPCA in order to enhance the volunteer experience. A structured evaluation interview will take place on an annual basis. |
LIGHT MAINTENANCE ASSISTANT
GENERAL DUTIES
- General assistance with light maintenance and repair of building and grounds.
Duties may include '
- Plumbing (unclogging drains etc.)
- Electrical tasks (changing light fixtures etc.)
- Caulking
- Window cleaning
- Sweeping and mopping floors
- Waste collection and removal to appropriate outdoor bins
- Removal of recycling material to appropriate outdoor bins
- 'Stoop and scoop' patrol on shelter grounds
- Light gardening and weed control
- Parking lot monitoring
- Kennel cleaning
- Interior painting (use of ladders may be included)
- Moving desks and office equipment
- Handling animal food donations
- Vehicle maintenance (must be at least 25 years old) including driving SPCA vans for gas fill-ups, oil changes, interior and exterior washes etc.
- Other duties as assigned
