POSITION Adoptions Centre Associate
SUPERVISION The Adoptions Centre Associates will work with our adoptions counselors under the direction of the Adoptions and Animal Care Manager.
TASK To assist SPCA centre reception staff in a variety of tasks including direct customer contact and merchandise sales; adoptions processing; data entry and telephone support. This position may also include off site reception at local retail outlets such as Petsmart or Petcetera.
QUALIFICATIONS Excellent verbal communication and 'people' skills suitable in a sales environment; a good overall knowledge of the SPCA building and program; telephone reception/sales/information giving and data entry. Appropriate training will be provided.
SCREENING All volunteers must complete the appropriate SPCA orientation, screening and training programs, including at least two personal references and a police clearance check.
HOURS OF WORK The centre reception area is open from noon to 7:30 pm weekdays and 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on weekends. Volunteer shifts will vary, usually lasting about three to four hours each. The need for volunteer centre reception assistants is most acute in the evenings (4:30 to 7:30) and on weekends.
EVALUATION An evaluation interview will take place after six months of service and thereafter on an annual basis.

ADOPTIONS CENTRE ASSOCIATE

GENERAL DUTIES

  • Welcome H\BSPCA visitors and answer general questions about our building and programs.
  • Assist adoptions centre staff with animal adoptions procedures including use of specialized data entry program for information searches and recording.
  • Offer adoptions 'counseling' as directed by adoptions centre staff to assist in ensuring a good match between customers and their prospective pets.
  • General sales and promotion of SPCA merchandise.
  • Monitor adoptions centre and kennel area and assist visitors as required.
  • Providing 'supervision' for customers visiting with dogs on leash (indoors or outdoors) and cats in viewing rooms, in compliance with SPCA insurance policy.
  • Dispense verbal and written information on SPCA special events.
  • 'Escorting' dogs and cats from kennels to adoptions centre as required for 'showing' for potential adopters.
  • Answer in-person and telephone queries regarding adoptions, animal health care and general information.
  • Assist adoptions centre staff with other related administrative or clerical duties as required.
