PROGRAMS & SERVICES >> Junior Humane Program / Apprentice Training Program

If you are between the ages of seven (7) and twelve (12) years old and are interested in helping animals, and learning more about the SPCA and proper pet care, then the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA Junior Humane Club is for you! The Junior Humane Club is a six week program that takes place for an hour each week. The class is broken up into two parts: an information and discussion session and an activity, craft or guest speaker.

Week 1 What is the SPCA? Members go on a behind the scenes tour of the SPCA to learn more about the shelter animals and the programs we offer. Children also begin to explore empathy.
Week 2 Cats and Cat Care Members will learn how to properly care for a cat. Topics such as proper food, exercise, grooming and safety will be addressed. Empathy is continued to be fostered.
Week 3 Dogs and Dog Care Members will learn how to properly care for a dog. Topics will include dog obedience, grooming, exercise, and safety with dogs. Activities that allow the children to empathize with the animal's feelings are also experienced.
Week 4 Small Rodents The proper care of rodents, birds, and fish will be addressed. Topics include housing, food, exercise and health. A focus on empathizing with the vulnerability of the small animals is also present.
Week 5 Wild Animals & the Environment Children will learn about respect for nature and about wildlife in our community. Children will also begin to understand their connection to their environment and how their actions affect other living things.
Week 6 Animal Cruelty & Empathy Children will learn about issues that surround animals, and what shelters and people can do to help end this problem. Children will also explore even more about animal feelings, needs, and what the word "empathy" really means.

The Junior Humane Club is offered three times a year in October, January and April. Each session is limited to 12 children and we will have two sessions per season. If you miss the enrolment or if the session is booked, please sign up for the following session.
